From Kitchen Tables to Passport Stamps: Why I Became a Travel Advisor (And How You Can Too)

Have you ever caught yourself planning a trip for someone else and thinking, I could actually do this for a living?
Maybe you’re the person everyone calls when they need help comparing resorts, choosing a cruise, organizing a family getaway, or building the perfect itinerary. You notice the details. You ask thoughtful questions. You know that the right hotel, flight time, or excursion can completely change someone’s experience.
And yet, you may also be wondering how a travel career could fit into your already-full life.
If you’re a busy mom, a dedicated caregiver, or someone ready for a new chapter, I want you to know something:
You don’t have to wait for life to become less busy before you begin building something meaningful.
I know because my own journey into travel started after two decades in education, and it began with the same things many of us already do every day: research, organization, problem-solving, and caring deeply about other people.
๐ My Story Started Around the Kitchen Table
Before Regal Scenic Journeys became a business, travel planning was simply something I loved.
After spending 20 wonderful years in education, I found myself craving a new direction. I had always enjoyed travel, history, and research. I also loved creating detailed plans for my family’s adventures.
I would compare destinations. Read reviews. Study maps. Build itineraries. Think through every “what if?” scenario.
It was the kind of work that made time disappear.
My sons noticed how much joy I found in it. They were the ones who encouraged me to turn my passion into a business.
At first, the idea felt exciting, and a little intimidating. Starting something new can bring plenty of questions:
- Do I know enough?
- Can I really build a business from home?
- What if I’m not a salesperson?
- How will I balance this with my family?
- Is it too late to begin again?
But I also knew I had skills that mattered. My background in education had taught me how to listen, communicate, organize information, solve problems, and guide people with patience.
Those are travel advisor skills, too.

✨ Why Travel Advising Felt Like the Right Next Chapter
Becoming a travel advisor was not just about loving vacations.
It was about finding work that connected my experience with my interests. It gave me a way to keep learning, help people, and create something of my own.
Today, I help families, couples, professionals, and groups plan meaningful travel experiences, from magical Disney vacations and Caribbean cruises to European escapes, honeymoons, destination weddings, and business travel.
Every trip is different.
One client may need a carefully structured family itinerary. Another may want a romantic honeymoon with beautiful details already handled. Someone else may need support coordinating flights, hotels, transfers, and meetings for a corporate trip.
The common thread is trust.
People want to know that someone is paying attention. Someone who understands their priorities. Someone who will be there when plans change.
That is the heart of travel advising.
๐ What This Career Can Offer a Busy Mom or Caregiver
Let’s be honest: flexibility does not mean doing nothing. Building a travel business requires consistency, learning, communication, and follow-through.
But it can offer a different kind of flexibility than a traditional job.
As an independent travel advisor, you can build your business around your life rather than trying to force your life into someone else’s schedule.
Here are a few reasons this path appeals to so many women in busy seasons of life:
1. You can begin part-time
You do not have to walk away from your current responsibilities or make a dramatic overnight change.
Many people begin with a few focused hours each week. You might work during school hours, after bedtime, on weekends, or whenever your schedule allows.
Then, as your confidence and client base grow, you can decide whether to expand.
2. You can work from almost anywhere
With a reliable computer, internet connection, and phone, your office can be your home, a coffee shop, or a quiet corner while traveling.
No commute. No required office wardrobe. No asking permission for every appointment or family event.
You create a schedule that supports your priorities.
3. You can build income with room to grow
Travel advisors generally earn through commissions from travel suppliers when they book qualifying travel. That means your earning potential is connected to the business you build, the relationships you nurture, and the value you provide.
This is not a promise of instant income. It is not a shortcut.
It is an opportunity to build a business over time, with patience, good service, and consistent effort.
For someone seeking more financial flexibility, that possibility can be powerful.
4. Your life experience becomes an advantage
You do not need to know every destination on earth before you start.
You need curiosity. Willingness to learn. Organization. Communication skills. A desire to help.
The skills you have gained through parenting, caregiving, education, hospitality, administration, customer service, or managing a household are not “just life skills.”
They are valuable business skills.
You already know how to coordinate moving parts, anticipate needs, and keep calm when plans change. Those abilities matter in travel.
5. Your work can have real meaning
Travel is more than reservations.
It can be a child’s first big adventure. A couple’s honeymoon after years of waiting. A family reunion. A milestone birthday. A well-earned break for someone who spends most of their time caring for others.
When you help someone create those memories, your work becomes part of their story.
That feels meaningful because it is meaningful.
๐งญ How You Can Begin Your Travel Advisor Journey
If you’re curious about becoming a travel advisor, start simply.
Step 1: Ask yourself what you want this opportunity to provide
Are you looking for:
- More flexibility?
- A part-time income stream?
- A creative outlet?
- A new professional identity?
- A path toward long-term financial goals?
- Work that feels connected to your love of travel?
Your answer will help shape the kind of business you want to build.
Step 2: Learn what the role really involves
A travel advisor does much more than search for cheap flights.
You may research destinations, communicate with clients, compare travel options, coordinate bookings, explain policies, create itineraries, stay current on supplier updates, and provide support when plans change.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics offers an overview of travel agent work and career information here.
Step 3: Choose training and mentorship carefully
You should not have to figure everything out alone.
At Regal Scenic Journeys, advisors receive access to training, supplier education, team meetings, webinars, resource libraries, and mentorship through our partner networks, including Archer Travel and Evolution Travel.
You can learn booking systems, destination knowledge, customer service, marketing, and practical business skills step by step.
Step 4: Start with the destinations and experiences you enjoy
You may already have a natural starting point.
Perhaps you love Disney planning. Maybe cruises are your favorite. Maybe you enjoy researching Europe, romantic travel, all-inclusive resorts, or family getaways.
You do not have to specialize in everything at once. Begin with what interests you, then continue expanding your knowledge.
Step 5: Build relationships, not just sales
The strongest travel businesses are built on trust.
Listen carefully. Ask good questions. Be honest about trade-offs. Follow through. Keep learning.
Your clients should feel that you are invested in finding the right experience for them, not simply making a booking.

๐ค You Don’t Have to Start Alone
When I began this journey, I understood how important support would be.
Starting a business while managing family responsibilities can feel overwhelming. There will be things you do not know yet. That is normal.
The right team can make the learning process feel manageable.
At Regal Scenic Journeys, we believe in sharing knowledge, celebrating progress, and encouraging one another. We meet regularly, learn from experienced advisors, and help new team members take their next step with confidence.
You bring your story, your skills, and your reason for beginning.
We help you build from there.
๐ A New Chapter Can Begin Wherever You Are
Maybe your kitchen table is where you answer emails after the kids are asleep.
Maybe you’re caring for an aging parent and need work that offers more control.
Maybe your children are growing up, and you’re ready to rediscover a part of yourself.
Maybe you simply feel that quiet pull toward something different.
You do not need to have every detail figured out today.
You only need to be willing to explore.
I began with a love of travel, a background in education, and encouragement from my sons. That first step eventually led to Regal Scenic Journeys, a business where I can help others travel well while supporting advisors who want to create a flexible career of their own.
Wander. Dream. Discover.
Your journey may begin with one conversation.
